UCU activists talk about the recent strike linking to the situation of academics in Turkey in relation to the plight of the Kurds. In 2016, academics in Turkey who signed a petition protesting the massacre of Kurds were arrested. Since the state of emergency exacerbated the repression of those critical of the government, around 9000 academics have lost their positions, many others are subject to travel bans and other forms of extrajudicial punishment.
Speakers from UCU and academics from Turkey will give an overview of the UCU strike in Britain and the situation of academics now in Turkey, in the context of the broader repression of Kurds and opposition politicians. The aim of the meeting is to deepen understanding and knowledge of both situations and enable links of solidarity between the two struggles.
